A Ring (I use metal 10-inch rings that I get from Amazon. These are the ones I have been using for several months and love!) Click here.
Macrame Cord (I use natural color 4 mm macrame cotton cord from Amazon. I love this size for the projects I make but you can work with a larger or smaller size! You could also use any type of cord or yarn that you might already have). Click here.
Wooden beads (I have tried a couple of different wooden beads on Amazon and these are my favorite. The holes are large enough to get a couple of cords through but not too big. These are optional if you like that look but you could also just do some simple knots instead of beads). I used to buy a multi-pack with both sizes but it has been unavailable so I buy them separately- they are just as good, in my opinion. Click here (15mm) and here (20mm).
Something to hold your ring in place (I use a little hook in the wall. You could also use some tape or a command hook to fasten the ring to the wall or table.
Scissors (to cut the cords and the bottom fringe if you choose to do so)
Tape (I use some tape to mark where I want to cut the bottom so it is perfectly straight. You definitely don’t need to do that!)
Now let’s get to Macra-making!
(Please don’t leave because I said that)
Once you have your space set up and your ring secured, we can cut the cord.
Cut your cords and attach them to the ring
For this wall hanging, I use 27 pieces of cord knotted on the ring. You fold them in half so you should have 54 strings hanging from the ring.
You will need the 27 cords to be about 3-4 feet long. Feel free to alter this length based on the size of your ring and your desired look.
Once you have all of your cords cut, we will tie them on the bottom of the ring.
Now, pick up one of your cords and fold it in half. Hold it from the loop you have just created at the top. Place it behind the ring and using two fingers reach through the loop and pull the two hanging pieces through the loop. You have created your first knot!
You will repeat this process with the remaining 26 pieces of cord until they are all on the ring.
*Make sure you are tying the knots the same direction or you will have your actual knots on both sides instead of only in the back.
Once you are done with this, double-check to make sure that you have 27 then find the centermost piece.
Add the beads and cut the bottom
This is the cord that we will be putting the beads on. I like to use two small beads on top with one big bead in the middle followed by two more small beads below that but you can do whatever pattern you like!
Lastly, we cut the bottom! If you want a straight edge, go for it! I tend to like the triangular bottom look so I actually tape off the shape I want and then cut. You can freehand it but mine never end up exactly how I wanted when I freehand it. Haha (I’ve never been a straight cutter)
You’re done!
That is it, super simple! I’ve found that many people really love the simplicity and I’ve sold quite a few!
You can use this as a framework to add knots and make it much more complex but if you want a super simple project to start with the boho look, I think this is the one!
Great Job on your project! I love the look that this style (especially along with some plants) can add to a home!
Please let me know if you try this! I’d love to know if you try different materials and see how it goes for you!
